6:30pm – Gender & The Bible
July 26, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
On Thursday this June and July, join Assistant Rector Peter Thompson for a series on gender and the Bible. In June, to mark Pride month, the series will consider the Bible from a transgender perspective. In July, the series will examine difficult passages from the Hebrew Bible through a feminist lens. Biblical texts will be provided at each session.
What does the Bible have to say about transgender and non-binary people, women, and sexual harassment and violence? How do we make sense of Biblical passages that don’t seem to accord with our modern ways of looking at gender? Bring your questions, your thoughts and your feelings for a lively and rich discussion. Everyone is welcome.
The series will be based on Austen Hartke’s Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians and Phyllis Trible’s Texts of Terror: Literary-Feminist Readings of Biblical Narratives. Books will be available from the Parish Office, but no reading in advance of the sessions is necessary.
The series takes place in the Guild Room at 6:30 pm, immediately following the Celtic Eucharist. Note: the series will not meet on Thursday, June 21.
